Heat Advisory

An NWS bulletin issued when forecast heat index will reach 100 to 105 F (regional threshold) for 2+ hours within 36 hours.

A Heat Advisory is an alert level issued by the NWS when forecast heat conditions pose risk to vulnerable populations and to anyone with prolonged outdoor exposure. The trigger threshold varies by region: roughly heat index 100 to 105 F in much of the US, with lower thresholds (HI 95 F) in cooler-climate states where populations are less acclimatized. A Heat Advisory typically triggers municipal cooling center activations, outdoor labor work-rest cycles, school athletic practice suspensions, and welfare checks on elderly residents. The recommended public actions during a Heat Advisory: limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of fluids, check on neighbors who are elderly or without AC, never leave kids or pets in vehicles, and watch for heat exhaustion symptoms. Heat Advisory is the lower of two heat alert levels. The higher alert, Excessive Heat Warning, is issued for more severe and prolonged events (typically HI 105 to 110 F sustained).
